Chapter Thirteen

"Perhaps, dearest, the best course of action is to simply consider menus.” Aunt Minnie clutched Arabella's limp hand and leaned closer as if to emphasize the point. Of course, the point, as it were, completely eluded the new Lady Mercer.

"Quite right, sister,” Aunt Mary chimed in. “Although there are certainly other things which you might think on, we feel that concentrating on the planning of a very fine meal is just the ticket to distract a woman from her conjugal duties."

Mary glanced at Grayson and shivered delicately. He stood across the room conversing with Vicar Morrison and his wife as they prepared to take their leave.

Dressed all in black, he stood politely, hands clasped behind his back, but there was a distinct edge to his manner tonight. It was almost frightening to behold. The three of them gazed at him for a moment or two. Mary and Minnie exchanged glances before industriously applying the identical fans they wore at their wrists.

The tension was killing her. And now the aunts were spouting nonsense.

Menus, indeed!

Already unbearably nervous over the coming night, Arabella squinted at the both of them and cocked her head in confusion. The guests were slowly departing from the elegant wedding supper provided by Grayson, her very, very new husband, and with the dreaded moment arriving soon, both aunts had taken this belated opportunity to speak with her about the rapidly approaching wedding night.

"I do not understand. What do the next day's meals have to do with the marriage bed?” she asked in a whisper. “And why, pray, could we not have indulged in this conversation at a more opportune time?"

"What better time than now, when that very large man is bent on consummating the marriage?” Minnie said. “Though Sister and I have never had the experience of a wedding night, it is our duty to educate you. We have discussed this quite a lot, you see, and we have concluded that a young bride should consider the subject of menus while the um ... act ... is occurring."

"But food? I should think of food?"

Minnie took her other hand and patted it as if she were still a toddler in leading strings. Shaking her head indulgently, she too, leaned closer. “Until the deed is done, Arabella dear, your mind should be fixed elsewhere and where better than on what you shall feed him the next day? Brilliant notion!"

Gazing at her husband of six hours, Arabella recalled the last moments spent alone with him in her room and shuddered. Something told her that Grayson would demand her utmost attention during her deflowering and food would be the farthest thing from either of their minds. But, the elderly ladies at her side had no clue as to just how lusty was his nature.

For the very first time, she realized that between a man and woman lie secrets never shared with others. Sobering thought that. Shared confidences would help them grow as man and wife and perhaps, one day, her husband would come to love her.
