Theo kept his gaze on Annie as long as he could. The wolf in him rejoiced as her eyes roamed his naked bodyâ¦he longed to show her his true form.
His back arched; his bones bent, felt as they always did during a change as if just for a second they were going to explode into a thousand tiny shards. A growl erupted from his throat. His mouth opened and he could feel his teeth growing, elongating. Hair sprouted from his body and he landed on all foursâ¦a wolf, facing his mate for the very first time.
Mate. Claim. The words pounded through his head. Annieâs scent invaded his lungs, overwhelmed all thought. He wanted to jump on her, throw her to the ground, let the world know she was his, let her know.
His hackles rose. He shook his head and growled at the animalâs thoughts.
He was the alpha. He, not the beast, was in charge.
The wolf fought back. For a moment, Theo thought the time had finally come, that he wouldnât be able to be in his wolf form while maintaining his human mindâ¦many weres lost the battle, had to be hunted and destroyed, or chased off to live as wolves in the North, far away from humans. Because while wolves didnât normally attack humans, weres who had lost the fight with their own wolf did. Almost as if they resented what they used to be, needed to prove the frailty of those old forms.
But it didnât happen; once again he gained control. Confident in that, he lifted his head and let the truth of who he was and what he was shine through his eyes.
Time to believe, Annie.
Her eyes widened. Her hand, as she lifted it to her mouth, shook. She looked pale and terrified, and he wanted to hold her, comfort her more than he had ever wanted anythingâ¦but he couldnât, not yet. She had to face the truth, had to accept it so he could save her and whatever werewolves were tempted by her unclaimed scent.
She had to come to him willingly. He wouldnât consider claiming her any other way.
