Sally still couldn’t believe that she was here in her favorite author’s living room. She sat tall and focused against the hard couch cushions, not wanting to miss a single word—a single moment—of this amazing afternoon. Before she knew it, though, their time together was already winding down.

MC Raven shifted in her chair and adjusted the sleeping kitten in her lap. “Just keep going, Sally. You have everything you need to get started. All you need to do is believe in yourself and try your best. You’ll end up rewriting most of the first book in edits anyway, but it’s still the most important story you’ll tell. The first is often the truest. It’s the one that needs to be told.”

The old woman rose slowly to her feet and offered the kitten to Tobias again, who eagerly accepted the stirring ball of fur.

Sally jumped awkwardly to her feet, waiting for whatever parting words of wisdom her new mentor was willing to impart.

MC gave her a tired smile. “Go get out there and tell your story, and when it’s ready, send it my way so I can forward it on to my agent. No guarantees, but you never know unless you ask, right? But first, come with me.” The old woman put a hand on Sally’s back and guided her into the kitchen.

Sally shot Tobias a glance over her shoulder, and he gave her a thumbs up with one hand while twirling a ribbon for the kitten with another.

“Thank you again for everything, Mrs. Raven,” Sally said as they turned the corner into the enormous wood-paneled kitchen. “It’s been a real honor.”

The author waved her hand and motioned Sally closer. With a whisper, she said, “You know I’m not the most important person in this room, right? That boy, Tobias, he had to move heaven and hell to set up this meeting. I know because I’m not easy to reach. I keep it that way on purpose, but he was determined to do this for you, which is why I just had to say yes. I see it in the way he looks at you, you know. He loves you dearly, the kind of love that not everyone gets to experience in this lifetime. So grab it tight and hold on for the ride of your life.”

Sally swallowed hard. “Thank you for saying so,” she whispered back. “But Tobias doesn’t love me. We’ve only recently become reacquainted, and we’re just friends.”

MC blew a raspberry, the suddenness of which caused Sally to giggle.

“Oh, please,” the author continued. “He loves you, and you love him right back. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you can get on with your happily ever after. The pain you’ve had in your life will help to fuel your writing, but the love that boy has for you will feed your soul. And that’s the best kind of love, anyway—the kind that comes on so fast and hard that nobody on this earth can stop it. It’s why I write the kinds of books I do.
