JULY

Chapter 21

Susan Hamilton and Yosef arrived in New Rojava in late July on a day prearranged with Amena, Sami and Rima. They brought a small group of friends and met in the revived club house gathered around a few mismatched tables and chairs. The roof still leaked in places due to the rain. They collected the leaks with various bowls and buckets.

“My friends, I failed you at a time when you needed friends most. I come asking for forgiveness and to see how we can work together now. I know Yosef stayed with you and that is why I asked him to come with me today,” Susan said.

“We’re used to the powerful letting us down. I told you in the hospital, you violated our trust and friendship. You decided we were guilty before we had a chance to defend ourselves. What happens when we have another setback. Will you be by our side or with the protestors out front?” Amena said.

“I was never with the protestors. My husband’s the mayor. We couldn’t publicly support you based on the way the evidence came to light. There were two dead young men with connections to New Rojava. We were advised to run for cover. We almost divorced over this. I was determined to bring you all here and he was against it. With the bombing, his worst fears were realized, and I bore the brunt of it. I retreated. And I’m sorry.”

“So, what’s different now?” Sami asked.

“You were vindicated. People’ll think twice now before jumping to conclusions. And I realized how much you suffered from my neglect. A dear friend helped to put me back on the right path.” She looked right at Yosef. “Thank you, my friend.”

Yosef nodded and pointed toward heaven.

“I also want to let you know that after our conversation in the hospital. I reached out to the Feds, and they have another group of Kurdish Refugees now due to arrive in August. If you’re willing to welcome them in.”

Everyone was excited about that. The room filled with chatter and buzz.

“We’ll need more apartments to be prepped. I’m afraid the ones that are left are in a very bad state,” Sami said. “May we work on them along with some of the contractors? We’ve gotten good at the work, just repairing our own units. We need materials and we want to be paid a fair wage. We need to replace the roof here and a few other places also.”

“I like that idea,” Susan said. “I’ll talk with the contractor. How many hands can you give?’

“We have at least twenty, off for the summer and needing work. They’re girls but they work hard. They’ve learned to do it better than some of the boys did back home before the war. They’ll be their own group. No outsiders please. I’ll supervise. We must protect our girls from these men that ogle them.”

“I like that even better,” Susan continued.

“Our girls can speak English well after a year in the American schools. We’re learning Spanish now too from Hamsa’s girlfriend Tina,” said Rima swelling with pride.
