Late Monday night, Johnny paced the living room, trying to formulate words. “But, Jim…” He couldn’t seem to finish the sentence.

“That’s your fourth ‘But Jim.’” Jim flashed a comforting smile. “Cat got your tongue, kid?”

Johnny shook his head. “No sir. I’m just stunned. You really want me to take Bobby’s place at the fundraiser?”

“Sure, it’s the only logical move.”

“No one knows who I am.”

“Yet.” Jim’s expression spoke of confidence. “But that’s because you haven’t won Talent Scouts yet. Once that’s behind you, every girl in California will be clamoring to see you.”

Funny. He didn’t want every girl in California. He only wanted one girl, and she seemed to look right through him.

On the other hand, maybe she would change her tune once she heard him sing. Maybe that would do the trick.

Jim continued talking about his plan of action, how he hoped to make Johnny a star before the fundraiser. A staged appearance at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre tomorrow afternoon. Photo ops for reporters immediately following. An impromptu singing gig at a local restaurant on Wednesday evening.

Johnny released a slow sigh, wondering how in the world he’d wandered so far from Topeka. In Kansas, everything was logical. Made sense. In Hollywood, the earth beneath his feet seemed to be moving at every turn. He could hardly stand for falling. His thoughts reverted to that line in The Wizard of Oz: “There’s no place like home.”

A sane person would turn and run. He wouldn’t risk everything to look like a fool in front of millions of people. He wouldn’t lay it all out there for the world—and Debbie Carmichael—to see.

On the other hand, he’d never been accused of being sane. No, he’d always been a little different. And if there was ever a place where “different” was okay, it was Hollywood, California.
