Aaron put his hands to the small of his back and stretched. “How many left?” He glanced into the truck: the number of wooden fence posts had reduced dramatically since they’d begun work that morning. Once lunch was over, it had been a case of straight back to work, not that Aaron minded. Working with Trent had given him the opportunity to talk. They’d discussed politics and gun control, Aaron’s work with the charity, Trent’s tales of some of his more… unusual deliveries—they hadn’t really stopped talking for more than five minutes.
It was only when he thought about it during lunch that Aaron realized Trent had managed to do a lot of talking, without really sharing anything about himself. He was no clearer about what made the man tick.
That gave him pause. I want to know more about him. The Trent who was emerging before his eyes had very little in common with the guy who’d tried to hook up with him in Costello’s.
Aaron really liked this Trent.
“Only a few more and then we’ll call it a day.” Trent shielded his eyes and gazed at the horizon. “It’s nearly time to stop for dinner anyway.” He peered over Aaron’s shoulder to the truck. “Is there any water left?”
“Sure.” Aaron reached down to where he’d placed a couple of bottles under the truck where it was shady. He grabbed one and passed it to Trent, who drank down half of it, his Adam’s apple bobbing, a trickle of water missing his mouth and tracing a path down his chin and onto his bare chest. Aaron tried not to stare but holy fuck, Trent was gorgeous. His tanned skin glistened with sweat, the dark circles around his nipples almost bronze. Watching Trent swing the sledge hammer to pound each post into the ground had been breathtaking, a ballet of muscles moving in harmony, rippling, contracting…
“Did you hear a word I just said?”
Aaron blinked. “Sorry. Apparently not.” His cheeks were suddenly hot and it had nothing to do with the sun.
Trent peered at him, smirking. “Do I want to know where your mind was?”
Aaron coughed. “No, you don’t. Now what did I miss?” He pulled himself together.
“Actually, I was bringing up something you mentioned the last time we were in Costello’s.” Trent cleared his throat. “You gave me the impression that I’ve been a topic of conversation in your therapy sessions.” He shrugged. “I was wondering if that happened often—not that you have to answer, you understand. Feel free to tell me to fuck off and mind my own business.”
Aaron laughed. “It’s okay. I don’t mind talking about it.” Then he realized that wasn’t just a line—he really didn’t mind. “You’ve been a frequent topic of conversation, actually.” Trent preened and Aaron snorted. “I could have been telling him what an ass you are, for all you know.”
Trent laughed. “Well, duh.” He fell silent, his gaze falling on his water bottle.
“Trent, is there something you wanted to ask me?” Aaron regarded him speculatively.
