Lark paced the solar, waiting for Dustin, wondering where he was this morning. Florie was already acting up, since she had nightmares all night long and Lark got very little sleep at all.

There was a knock at the door, and she ran over to greet him.

“Where have you been?” she asked as she opened the door. She stopped from saying more when she realized it was Sister Joan, not Dustin.

“My lady, I am here to care for the child,” said the nun. Her hands were folded in front of her and she slowly nodded her head in respect.

“Well, the scribe is arriving at any minute to tutor Florie,” explained Lark, looking back at her daughter who was yawning, sitting on the stool at the table, swinging her feet back and forth.

“Oh. Did you want me to return later, then?” asked Sister Joan.

“Nay, I suppose you can come in and wait.” Lark moved aside and the nun entered.

“Hello, Florie, I am Sister Joan,” said the nun, speaking in a soft tone so as not to frighten the child. She walked in a gliding motion over to Florie who looked at her curiously.

“Why do ye wear that robe? Why is yer head covered?” asked the girl. “What color hair do ye have?”

Florie was always asking questions, and sometimes it became overwhelming to others around her. The last thing Lark wanted was for her daughter to scare the nun away.

“Florie, stop asking her so many questions,” said Lark, leaving the door open and heading over to the table. “Sister Joan is here to help take care of you, so be nice to her.”

Florie crossed her arms over her chest and pouted.

“I don’t mind your questions,” said Sister Joan. “Would you like to see my hair?”

“Yes!” Florie looked excited.

“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to show you, although nuns are supposed to wear their wimples everywhere they go.” Sister Joan removed her wimple to expose her brown hair tied up atop her head.

“My hair is yellow,” said Florie.

“Yes, it is golden, like a princess, and very pretty.” The nun reached out and gently ran her hand over Florie’s head, making the little girl smile.

“I would like to be a princess. That would be fun,” said Florie.

“Good morning, I am sorry I am late.” Dustin walked in, but stopped when he saw the nun.

“Oh, excuse me,” said Sister Joan, turning away and putting her wimple back in place.

Dustin stood there, staring, and Lark didn’t understand why.

“Are ye feelin’ ill?” she asked him.

“Nay.” He shook his head. “Nay, I’m fine.”

“Oh, ye have more letters for me,” said Lark, looking down to the parchments in his hand. “Let me read them.” She took them from him and headed across the room.

“There are only three today,” he told her, putting his things on the table. He seemed nervous for some reason. Lark decided it must be because the nun was here and he wasn’t used to having a lot of people watching during his lessons.

“I hope ye dinna mind that I told Sister Joan she could stay for Florie’s lesson?”

“Nay.
