And the list goes on and on. Now isn’t that interesting? Can our government not process these applications, which prevents more Latino representation and ability to vote? Interesting.

I began providing nonviolence classes to men batterers in Spanish and in English. In working with the men, I believe they were quite astonished that a white American woman was even teaching them anything. The cultural differences brought many discussions about why we Americans do what we do, what laws back up that treatment, and how to treat a woman with respect. The Latino men batterers taught me a lot also, for instance, slang words and explanations of cultural differences that explained what machismo was and the ability to even admit to their violence, which of course, was a must in these classes.

This job happened to be a good fit for me. First, it fell into my work as a peace advocate through my denomination and upheld my beliefs about nonviolence. I was able to teach peace and respect to a captive audience. I would not allow any of the students to minimize their violence, collude, blame, or deny their violence of women. Any statement of such would be called out, and of course, it was hard for the men to accept at first, but little by little, they got the point and saw that these four things were not tolerated in class and in their daily lives. In the long run, they began to listen to themselves outside of the class and what they were saying and doing to their partners. They talked of taking responsibility for their actions and words. I had the men for twenty-six weeks or more, and so I do believe they left, at least, thinking a little differently—and I hoped that they would act differently around their loved ones or future loved ones. There is no guarantee that the men will actually change their behavior, but at least, I made sure they participated in the class and had food for thought.

For the Latino male, it was a little different because I was a woman, but on the other hand, I have been told that in the Latino population, they trust the outsider (American worker) more than their own. They told me that they were not aware of some of the laws in America and were appreciative and receptive to learning what the new laws were in the United States. Once trust was established, they would ask a lot of questions. Half of the problem was that not everyone receives a written handbook that tells a newcomer, “You may not beat your wife, you may not hit your children with a belt, and you may not drive without a driver’s license, etc.” Here, the law does have power—some may disagree on that, but coming from other countries where the law is useless, and the power is held by gangs and drug cartels, it is a lot different. Here in the United States, the police
