Chapter Sixteen

“This is Bud Blake. I’m interested in a quiet retirement place and I’d like to take a look at a property you’re offering.”

Adrenaline surged through Stacey, and she sat bolt-upright at her desk.

Bud Blake? The Bud Blake who owned a chain of barbecue places around Kansas City, who could more than afford Leticia’s property? It had to be. The voice sounded exactly like the man on the TV commercials.

She fumbled for the notepad on the edge of the desk, knocked her pen on the floor, and yanked a new one out of the drawer. “I’d be happy to help you, sir.” She was talking too fast. She needed to slow down. “Which property are you interested in?”

As if she didn’t know. She only had one listing, the one she’d shown Jeremy this morning. But Bud Blake didn’t need to know that.

She played it cool for the rest of the conversation and set up an appointment. “I look forward to showing you the house and grounds next week. I think you’ll love it.” She hung up and gave a quick prayer of thanksgiving.

If he made an offer, Sunset Lake would stay undeveloped. She’d show Abundance she was a mature professional and earn her first commission, a big one. And if Earl Ray happened to notice she made the sale that kept his cousin happy, all the better.

Finally, things were looking up. Even the smell in her office seemed a little more pleasant. She’d run over to Cassidy’s Diner, get an iced tea, and give Tess a call to update her.

She took her purse out of the bottom drawer of her desk and her phone rang again. “Hello, this is Stacey Gilcroft.”

“Stacey, Jeremy Seasky here.”

A shudder ran through her.

Over the phone, he sounded even slicker than he did in person.

“Jeremy, how wonderful to hear from you,” she lied.

“I talked to my uncle. He says the local restaurants won’t matter. We can put a bistro on site, tell the guests the price is all-inclusive except for alcohol, and rake in the money.” He chuckled. “I’m sending you an offer.”

“Wow, that was fast.” She felt like she’d been hit with a skillet. He’d only seen the place this morning. “I mean, uh…”

“Once you’ve been in the business as long as I have, you’ll know that this is where you close the deal, not slow things down.”

“I, uh, I don’t want to slow—”

“Just kidding. Seriously, my uncle has been considering buying lake property for more than a year. Once he saw the photos of that place, it was weird—I don’t know—like he’d seen it in a dream or something. He wanted it. We spent the whole weekend checking details online.”

“I’m so glad you both like it.” Still numb, she pulled the proper phrasing from her memory. “I’ll watch for your offer, discuss it with the owner, and get back with you.” She hung up. The numbness faded and the reality of the phone call trickled through her veins. Bit by bit, her stomach tightened like the time she’d eaten some bad shrimp.
