Cormorandière (or Kennington) Cove from a 1912 photo.

The British landing succeeded on 8 June at Cormorandière (or Kennington) Cove thanks to Wolfe’s mixed force of grenadiers, light infantry and Highlanders. The troops were divided into three groups under (1) Wolfe at left, (2) Lawrence, and (3) Whitmore.

6 June At noon, ten companies of the Cambis Regiment marched into Louisbourg. They had been landed at Port Dauphin from Commodore Duchaffault’s small French squadron, which then sailed on to Quebec. At this time, some 2,005 men, which was most of the garrison, were posted outside the walls.

7 June Fog and a heavy surf prevented a landing by the British. In the evening, however, the weather calmed a bit and Amherst ordered a landing attempt early the next morning.
