Chapter Five
The weather was beautiful Sunday morning. Donna was relieved because there’d been a thirty percent chance of rain in the forecast. She didn’t want to get baptized in the rain, although she wasn’t certain why. She’d be getting wet anyway, wouldn’t she? And how was she going to be able to change after her baptism? How did they handle that?
She wore her new lavender dress for the service that morning, proud that she’d done most of the work herself. Irene had guided her and helped her when she ran into trouble, but the bulk of the work had been done with her own two hands. She had never cared much for sewing and had been surprised by the sense of accomplishment she’d felt as she’d held the dress up in front of her with it completely finished.
She slipped on a pair of white sandals and decided to skip the pantyhose. She had no need to wear them since she had developed a tan as she’d traveled.
Sitting between Renee and Irene in church, she barely heard the sermon, she was so nervous. Not only was she getting baptized, she would be the only one wearing a bathing suit in front of all those people. She followed along with the scriptures Paul suggested as best she could as she watched him.
He was one of the most handsome men she’d ever met and he was interested in her. How was that even possible?
She changed into her bathing suit in the restroom at the back of the church before they left for the lake. She sat wringing her hands together in the backseat as they drove, suddenly extremely nervous. She knew she was doing the right thing, of course, but that didn’t make it any less nerve wracking for her.
When they pulled up to the lake, she was surprised at the huge amount of people there. “That’s more than you had at your grandmother’s last weekend!” she said to Renee.
“Yeah, not everyone made it last time.” Renee pointed to a large gray tent that had been erected not far from the lake. “That’s where you’ll change after your baptism.”
“Oh wow! I was wondering about that.” She had put on shorts and a tank top over her swim suit so she could just strip down, but didn’t want to put clothes back on over her wet swim suit afterward. “That’s a good idea!” She looked around, unsure of where she should go.
Everyone seemed to have a job and know exactly what they were supposed to be doing. Some people were gathering at the water, while others were starting up charcoal grills. Donna could see still others spreading tablecloths on picnic tables. She was shocked at the sheer number of people there. It looked like it was at least two hundred people. “Are all of these people your family?”
Renee laughed. “It’s actually a mix of three different families. My great grandmother was an orphan, and her best friend moved out here and married as a mail order bride not long after she did.
