PART IV

EARLY SKYSCRAPERS

Main Street in downtown Dayton was home to a number of impressive early skyscrapers, including the Callahan Building, the Reibold Building and the United Brethren Building (Centre City Building), all of which were added to over time. Together, they helped Dayton become a new class of city—one that towered high into the sky and literally elevated public perception of the downtown area as a dynamic center of commerce. The fates of these buildings have diverged significantly in the decades since. The Callahan is long gone, and the Reibold was remodeled and is well occupied by county offices. The Centre City Building stands vacant but awaits a chance at a new life.
