Finally, she said, “Frances Gilmore.”
I repeated the name to Joanne. I had an image of her driving her car, talking on the phone, and writing all this down. I hoped she was at a red light.
“Description?” was her next question.
“What’s she look like?” I asked Cordelia.
“Five-five, weight around one hundred and fifteen. Twenty-four years old. Not very muscular, no regular exercise, brown hair with obviously dyed blond streaks in it, shoulder-length, green eyes, gold wire-frame glasses, regular features, no visible scars…”
“Thin lips, teeth that haven’t seen a dentist in a while,” Lindsey added.
Cordelia shrugged, indicating that she had run out of physical things to describe.
I repeated these to Joanne.
“Job?” Joanne asked.
“Any idea where she works?” I paraphrased.
Cordelia shook her head. “She paid in cash, no record of insurance.”
“Someplace where she makes enough money to spend about fifty to eighty dollars a week on flowers,” Lindsey commented.
Joanne just sighed at that last piece of imprecise information.
“We’ll check it out.”
“Thanks, Joanne.” Then because she was too much of a cop to volunteer information but she might tell me if I asked, I did. “Could this be the killer?”
“Could be. No proof that the killer’s male.” The static overtook the conversation and she was gone.
I shrugged for an answer to Cordelia and Lindsey.
“I’m exhausted,” Cordelia said as I replaced the receiver.
“You did the right thing,” Lindsey assured her. Cordelia had a habit of saying she was tired when she was upset. Lindsey probably knew her well enough to know that.
“I hope so. What if siccing the police on Frances doesn’t bring Tasha back and only shatters a fragile person?”
