Food logging: how to measure your food intake
The next measurement for the rest of the day was how many calories I was consuming and their nutritional content. Known as food logging, there are plenty of programmes and free or paid-for apps out there to make the whole process easier. You just need to find one that works for you and put aside some time to set them up. Most people go straight to MyFitnessPal â of all the apps I paid for, I know Iâll be using this for the rest of my life. Compatible with Appleâs iPhone, the app also works with Android devices. MyFitnessPal isnât perfect (nothing is) but it works because you can log your weight and scan barcodes, which gives instant nutrient levels for all the foods you need. The data revolution has meant it is now easy to see how horrific the sugar content is in foods. Iâd scan a can of fizzy drink, then hastily delete it from my log.
And the app remembers what youâve eaten in previous meals, making it simple to add this information to your food log. The app creates a pie chart of the percentage of each macronutrient youâve consumed as well as the calorific value. So over time you build up a valuable store of data, even down to how much vitamin C youâre consuming. The app also allows you to log the time you eat, which means you can tell if youâre falling into bad habits such as eating late at night, too close to going to bed.
Like weighing yourself on the scales, some people will tell you not to measure what you eat, but as I was on a strict Keto diet, where the allowance of carbs is 20g or less a day, I found it very useful. A breakfast was usually a standard plate of eggs and bacon. With the app, I felt more in control and had a sense of where I was on my weight-loss journey. At first, I was quite obsessive about monitoring my food intake but now, four years on, Iâm more relaxed about it and know I can return to food logging if bad habits are creeping in.
