So Daring Dick’s contributions must have been most discreetly distributed to his beneficiaries, and while the perhaps slightly conflicted churchmen involved would have been in little doubt as to the provenance of all this bounty, they probably found it easier to play their essential part in this early manifestation of socialism by sticking to the age-old maxim of “ask no questions”. Which probably explains why, as far as the Church was concerned, this was all kept strictly “off balance-sheet”.

Daring Dick Dreadfus was never caught, and his “collaboration” with the seductive Lady de Kuyper only came to light several generations after their deaths. Dick was said to have had mistresses in Stow, Burford, Cirencester, and even in Northleach itself, plus a string of more casual “admirers” in most of the villages in between, which between them all would have provided him with an almost infinite choice of “safe houses” in which to lie low during the hue and cry that followed his more audacious or high-profile robberies.

He was held (by those who saw him unmasked) to be a “devilish handsome fellowe” with fair hair and piercing blue eyes, and that he was both charming and debonair there can be little doubt. Even in his declining years he was noted by one of the great beauties of the day to be “the verrye epitome of eternal youthe”. What is certain is that he was fearless in the pursuit of both women and treasure, and very widely admired on both counts. Had he lived in the twentieth century he would probably have been a damned good cook as well!
