Chapter Seven

“WHAT?” MY VOICE was probably a little louder than it should have been, but I was freaking out. The show had just started and now he wanted to quit? It didn’t make any sense. “Why?”

He shook his head but looked down at my hands (nails painted in red, too, by the way) and took them in his. Oh, his hands were warm and strong and I was devastated knowing that this might be the only time I got to feel them. “More reasons than I can tell you, but mainly…I’ve started wondering what the hell I was thinking signing up for this. It’s strange. I would love to get to know you for real, but I don’t think it’s possible in this environment.”

“I want to get to know you, too, Darius—and I know what you mean, but I’m kind of getting used to the show aspect. Actually, it’s starting to feel a little fun.”

I could tell by the look in his eyes that he didn’t believe me.

“That’s not all, though. I—” He stopped himself, pausing and, it seemed, changing what he planned to say. “I’m worried about someone in my family. Since we can’t contact them in here, all I can do is worry, but I have no clue what’s going on—and that makes me think it’s selfish of me to be here instead of home with them.”

I didn’t know what to say and figured he’d already made up his mind by this point—but then what I needed to say hit me. “You talked to them about the show before you left, didn’t you?”

“Actually, yeah. A lot. And I hoped to win, because I could really use the cash.”

“Cash? What cash?”

A confused look moved over his eyes like a shadow. “Maybe you didn’t know?” I shook my head. “The farther we make it, the more money we walk away with. And the guy who makes it to the end wins a quarter of a million dollars. I think the idea is to give the new bride a dream wedding and honeymoon and stuff like that, but—” He cut himself off like he’d said too much, but by this point, I had to know.

“But what?”

Struggling with his words again, he finally said, “I’ll just say that that much money would help my family out more than you know.”

I squeezed his hands, hoping my words sounded kind and compassionate. “Then stay. They’ll understand.” He lowered his eyes to gaze upon my fingers. “Besides, it’s only four weeks.”

At that point, I had no other arguments to make and I wondered what I’d do if I were in his shoes. Knowing I’d strongly consider leaving, that was what I expected Darius to do—so I gently clasped his hands one last time, trying to imagine how the show would deal with a defection. I imagined they would wind up not having the vote they promised and then we’d move to week two’s elimination. Otherwise, the show wouldn’t last as long as they’d promised.

Of course, I didn’t know what the men’s contract looked like compared to mine.
