Kay woke the next morning alone; Harry must not have returned from Lewisville. Had he dropped off Ned Blackthorne and gone with another woman? An affair might explain his behavior. She groaned, clutched her pillow to her belly, and brought her knees up, seeking comfort. But instinctively, she doubted—only to cry out. Maybe he’d crashed the Hupmobile and lay in a ditch somewhere.

No, he’d draped his pants from last night over a chair. Kay listened for kitchen or bathroom sounds, heard none. Maybe he’d come home very late and gone out again this morning, Lord knew why. She got up and looked through the window, and the driveway stood vacant. So much for resolving their differences.

If he did have another woman, would that cause more trouble or relieve it? His betrayal would hurt, but a divorce would be hers for the asking. Kay shut her eyes. She pictured him walking out, not even looking over his shoulder, and what the Lumberton gossips would say, and she flung her arms over her head. He wouldn’t jeopardize his political career by taking a mistress. Would he?

But she kept seeing the Sorensens before a judge, petitioning for divorce.

He came back wearing his fishing vest, smelling of summer air. She brightened; what a lovely way to start the Fourth. Once again, she’d listened to her sour side. “So that’s where you were,” she said, drying off her breakfast dishes. “Where’d you go?”

“Just the creek. But the fish weren’t biting.”

“Must have been beautiful. On a morning like this.” But she caught herself hoping that Harry hadn’t gone to Rollie’s favorite spot, like it belonged to him alone, and frowned.

“The creek was gorgeous.” He smiled, but it faded quickly. “I don’t suppose you could rustle up some bacon and eggs?”

He’d asked like he’d expected a refusal. “Sure. Have a seat.”

As she broke the eggs into a bowl and took out a frying pan, Kay wondered where to begin, or even what would satisfy her, exactly.

But he moved first. “You made quite an impression on Ned last night. And not the right one.”

Back on her heels, already. “He was talking down to me.”

“No, he wasn’t. And what was all that about refusing to campaign for me unless you liked my platform?”

Kay cut off a couple strips of bacon and melted butter in the frying pan. While the bacon cooked, she beat the eggs with a fork, wishing she’d had the courage and presence of mind to take the initiative. She could do that at the office—had done it—but not with her husband. “Harry. I feel . . . used.”

“Do you? So do I.”

If she objected, he countered. Sighing to herself, Kay removed the bacon to drain, poured the eggs into the frying pan, and faced him. “How so?” She took care to sound concerned, not challenging.

“You get my name, my money, and the chance to be a state representative’s wife. That’s power.”

“Is that so? Chalmers is every bit as good a name as Sorensen, if not better, and you damn well know it.
