Got the Hump

What: The camels of Eastcheap

Where: 20 Eastcheap, EC3M 1EB

Walk along Eastcheap and you will come across a rather unusual sight: three camels being led across a desert.

No, it is not some sort of mirage but the frieze above number 20, known as Peek House. The building was constructed in the 1880s as the headquarters of the Peek Brothers & Co: importers of tea, coffee and spices. At the height of their success, they accounted for five per cent of the tea trade into London.

The camels were carved by William Theed the Younger and were the company’s trademark. The three camels are said to represent their main trades in tea, coffee and spices and, for a time, they traded their tea under the ‘Camel’ brand name.
