WHEN DRIVING IS DANGEROUS

Driving a car means independence to most adult Americans; it means visiting friends and going to the store and seeing our doctors, without assistance and on our own schedule. By the time a person reaches age 65, he or she may well have been driving nearly fifty years. It’s no wonder, then, that we take driving for granted! But the many changes that affect us as we age can make it unsafe to be behind the wheel. We may have to face the possibility of losing the freedom of driving. This loss is often frightening and nearly always frustrating. It may lead to isolation and depression.

Because people age differently, numerical age is not the factor that decides whether a person needs to stop driving; the person’s driving capabilities do. All of the physical, sensory, and cognitive changes described in Chapter 1 can affect driving ability. If you search YouTube videos (youtube.com) for “older driver simulation,” you can see interesting videos of how younger drivers, when physically adapted to be more like older drivers (by adding weights and restricting motion), find it very difficult to drive. These videos are eye openers, clearly demonstrating how the effects of aging can affect driving ability.
