Discuss with the client the Serenity prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr, which focuses on acceptance. The counsellor should be aware of the client's beliefs, and can adapt the prayer as appropriate, such as leaving in or removing the word God or referring to it as a verse. The prayer has such an inherently powerful message, it can be very helpful in the counselling setting.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot

change; The courage to change the things I can; And the wisdom to know the difference.
