NOW HE was four months sober, alone in his apartment, and needed to move forward to set things right. Dwelling on the past wasn’t doing him any good. A familiar pain rose in his chest as he thought about talking to Nick to let him know that he was okay.

THE NEXT day he went to a meeting with Todd.

“I need to figure out what I’m going to do with myself,” Sean said as they stepped out of the church and onto the sidewalk.

Todd stopped and people spread out around him as they poured out of the meeting and onto the dark sidewalk. “As far as what?”

“Sooner or later I have to get back to work.”

“Are you desperate for money?”

He shook his head. He’d closed his savings account the previous week; thankfully he still had his stocks.

“You’re a hell of a lot better off than most people in their first four months of sobriety.”

“I have a lot to be thankful for.”

“We all have a lot to be thankful for.”

“Amen,” someone passing by called out.

“I’m sober.”

“And you’re alive,” Todd said.

Sean nodded.

“You could give Nick a call. I’m sure you have his number.”

Sean’s stomach tightened. “I’m not quite ready for that.”

“I can be there when you do it.”

Oh no, Sean did not want any witnesses if Nick asked for a divorce.

“What are you afraid of?”

Sean closed his eyes. Swallowed. “I’m still in love with him.”

“And you’re still married to him; that has to mean something.”

Sean shrugged.

“Come on, I’ll give you a ride home.”

They walked to Todd’s black truck, Endpoint Contracting printed in large white letters on the side, and climbed inside.

They were quiet for a few blocks, then Todd said, “You can’t get your life back on track if you don’t talk to Nick.”

Sean gave him a sideways glare. Thinking about Nick and what might happen made him nervous. He’d lost his car, had his driver’s license suspended for three months, and had to pay three thousand dollars in fines and court fees. Three thousand dollars was a big chunk of change to pay out, especially since he wasn’t working.

“You okay?” Todd asked.

“Yeah, just thinking about everything. I’ll be fine.”

His phone buzzed with a call, so he pulled it out of his pants pocket. It was his mother calling to ask if he could fix a leaky pipe in the basement. He said he would drop by the following day.
