I MAY THINK that someone has the perfect life, and therefore doesnât need encouragement. Or I may see that they have it bad, but I donât want to bother them or offend them by saying the wrong thing. Either way, I assume things and stay quiet.
A friend of mine is a famous writer. Heâs had big success and won awards and been on TV. He told me once: âWhen something major happens, no one texts me to say congratulations or tells me theyâre excited for me. Except for my team, the people I pay. They tell me. I think my friends assume everyone else is doing that, so they donât. It sucks to achieve your dreams and feel more alone than when you were scraping by with the guys.â
Another friend of mine had his brother go to prison. It was a big deal. They showed it on the news and everything. I didnât call my friend because I thought heâd be so embarrassed. I didnât want to let on that I knew. A year later, I found out that through that whole horrible ordeal, no one called him. He said heâd never felt so alone. In his time of need, no one showed up, because everyone assumed someone else was doing it.
You know that poster at the airport that says, âIf you see something, say somethingâ? Thatâs become my motto. If somebody is killing it, Iâm going to tell them. If theyâre hurting, Iâll offer my hand. I am not going to assume anyone else exists but me and them. No one who would do what Iâd do to make my friend feel seen.
