The next morning, I wake up and I have to get up and go to practice. I look in the kitchen and there has to be at least a hundred beer bottles sittin’ there on top of that big table.

I had to go to practice, so I didn’t have time to put them away, so Rose was goin’ to have to do it.

But Rose was pretty understanding. I don’t know how she put up with me.

As everybody used to say, “Rose, there’ll be a medal in heaven when you get there for puttin’ up with this guy.”

When we were on the buses and we’d go from Quebec into Ontario, we’d always pick up Red Cap beer.

In Ontario, back when I was startin’ to drink at the age of twenty-one, every tavern had Carling’s Red Cap Ale on draft. They had other ones later, but all the hockey players drank Red Cap.

You never could get Carling Red Cap Ale in Quebec—naturally, because the red cap on the label is an English cap and all that. If you looked at the back of the bus when we’d been in Ontario and we were going back to Quebec, it would be all piled up with Red Cap beer.

We had our priorities in the minors.
