Chapter Fourteen

Katie loved Ellison’s heated seats. They were toasty warm before she even got in the car, and now that she was nestled into them, they were lulling her to sleep. She glanced out the window at the empty streets and bright streetlights when something occurred to her.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“My place,” Ellison replied.

“Which is nowhere near where I live, it seems,” Katie pointed out.

“Hmm?”

“You told me driving me home those times was no big deal because I was on the way to your place,” Katie replied. “This is the exact opposite direction of my house.”

“Oh,” Ellison said, looking bashful. “I lied.”

“You lied?”

Ellison nodded. “Your house was not on the way to mine.”

“I can see that,” Katie said with a laugh. “So why did you offer to drive me, then?”

“Because you needed a ride. And I enjoy your company,” Ellison replied matter-of-factly.

“Do you still enjoy my company? Even after I got you out of bed in the middle of the night to rescue me?”

“Especially because of that,” Ellison said, smiling at her sweetly as they pulled up to a light. “And I already told you not to worry about that. I’m happy to help.”

“You say that now, but what if I like your guest room so much I never leave and become a squatter. What then?” Katie asked.

“I’m sure my limited domestic skills will drive you out long before that happens.”

“Are you messy?”

Ellison gave her a look. “Do I strike you as messy?”

“Not at all. I bet your place is clean enough to eat off the floors,” Katie said, smiling for the first time tonight at the thought of Ellison cleaning the house.

Ellison scrunched her nose. “I have cleaners, and they came by today. So you’re right.”

“I’m very intuitive,” Katie teased. She looked up at the building they were approaching slowly. “Where are we?”

“Home,” Ellison said as she eased into the brick-paved front of a luxury condominium.

“Well, damn.” Katie wasn’t sure what to say. It made perfect sense that Ellison lived in a fancy apartment building. She’d just never considered it before.

A gentle-faced valet opened Katie’s door, startling her.

“Sorry, miss.”

“It’s okay,” she said as she took the white gloved hand he offered to help her out.

In a moment Ellison was by her side, taking her uninjured hand and guiding her toward the entrance. Katie looked back at the car to grab her bag, but she could see Mr. White Gloves carrying it for her.

She rode the elevator in silence as Ellison made small talk with Mr. White Gloves, who it appeared was also known as Pavel.

Pavel held open the door of the elevator when they got to Ellison’s floor and took Ellison’s keys to open her apartment before placing Katie’s gym bag in the foyer. In a flash, he was gone, and they were all alone in the most expensive-looking apartment Katie had ever stepped foot in.

“Come in, get comfortable. Let me get you something to drink. Are you hungry?” Ellison shrugged off her jacket, hanging it in the closet next to the front door before helping Katie shrug off the one draped over her shoulders.
