It was Monday and the work week was about to start. John walked into the kitchen feeling very nervous. His mother and Liz were already there and so, surprisingly, was his grandmother, all dressed and looking like she was going somewhere important. ‘Good morning. I’ll just have coffee, please mum. I don’t think I could eat anything. I’ve called a board meeting for nine and I’m not sure what the outcome of it is going to mean for me, or Dad for that matter.’ At which point his father walked into the kitchen.

John turned to him and said, ‘I’d like you to come to the office with me this morning Dad, please. I’ve called a board meeting at nine. I want to find out what the board wants, and I want you to hear everything that is said. After that we will make an appointment with the funeral directors. Mum, I’ll let you know what time it is once I’ve rung them, and we will meet you there.’

‘Actually, do you mind if I come as well. I know enough about the business to know that when Harry died, I get to have a say in his place, and this morning I feel like having a say.’ Mavis said, her tone indicating that she wasn’t interested in hearing no for an answer. Ben and John both looked at Mavis in surprise. Who is this woman, I’ve never met her before? Ben thought.

‘Okay...’ they both replied in unison.

Talk about things being said in stereo, John thought looking at his grandmother in surprise. All these years, and he had no idea that his grandmother had an interest in the business, let alone that she could take her husband’s place at the meetings. ‘Mum, do you want in on this family party too? It will save you from having to drive to the funeral director’s office on your own.’

‘Yeah, why not? The more the merrier by the sounds of it. Give me five to go and get ready.’

‘Oh, wow, wouldn’t I like to be a fly on the wall of that meeting, but I have to go and do some real work. I’ll see you all tonight.’ Liz said as she followed her mother out.

John entered the board room, while his father, mother and grandmother waited in his office, or what had been Ben’s office on Friday. As he walked to the head of the table, which was at the opposite end of the room, he looked around and noted with satisfaction that Trudy, who was standing just inside the door, had seen to it that there were two extra chairs at the table.

Nine faces looked at him, belligerently, so John took the upper hand.

‘Gentlemen, before we start this meeting, I want to bring in some people who have a very important stake in what will happen here today. As you have all been told, Harry died of a stroke in the early hours of Saturday morning. I have been informed, and I have no reason to doubt the information, that his place should now be filled by his wife.
