As John forced himself into the underground chamber, he did his best not to allow his mind to replay what he had encountered there just a few short hours ago. Walking slowly into the room, he turned his attention to the figures standing around the Menorah, and the distinct voice that came from one of them.

“You see gentlemen—and ladies.” Dr. James Levi nodded to the two women police officers who had stood off to the side while the forensics officers had completed their grisly work. “It shows here where there were six other branches. How they broke off, only history knows. You can’t imagine the significance of seven branches. Seven! Not nine like those made after the destruction of the second temple. This is very old. Very old indeed!”

And then the doctor caught sight of John and his agitated motions stopped. The smile slipped from his face and a frown puckered the heavy eyebrows. “You! We must talk!”

John shrank against the gruff voice, instantly wishing he hadn’t decided to return to the oppressive room. He might have turned and bolted, but the old man pushed his wizened shoulders back and shifted his plump belly within the waistband of his plain black pants. Nodding toward the candlestick, he locked brown eyes onto John—knowledge of something deeper and not altogether good churning in their depths. “What do you know of this?” So much for familial greetings.

John turned to eye the glittering candlestick. “It’s good to see you too, Uncle.” He couldn’t stop his mind from tripping back through time to one of the last encounters with the man. He had saved his life in the garden beside the estate house. And since then, much had changed. The detective had filled John in on his uncle’s journey through life. Texas A &M University professor. Expert retained by the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas. The man was just loaded with credentials. And John barely knew him now.

The older man lifted a corner of his mouth and shook his head. He stood still for a moment, cocking his head to the side in order to study John further. And then he waved the air with a cloth-covered gnarled hand and continued his boisterous speech, “Ah, John . . . let’s just leave that past where it is and start over.” He followed John’s stare and studied the artifact alongside him. “How did it get here? How did we not know this existed?”

John shifted his weight and tossed a glance at the stone altar. He shuddered and wiped at his eyes again before turning back to the glowing object. “I-I don’t really know anything. Except I saw it in a dream before I was here. I mean—” He cast a wary glance to the detective who had already turned away and headed down the hall to the stairs and the study above. And then John turned back; his uncle’s raised eyebrow greeted him. “I saw it after I ran down here when Isabella screamed.
