Lucy: Addressing Anxiety Over the End of Treatment

Lucy, who had an aggressive form of metastatic breast cancer, was just one day away from her last round of chemotherapy. All along she had anticipated the end of chemo—no more long car trips, no aftereffects of the drugs, no schedule disruptions—yet here she was feeling inexplicably tense. The anxiety she experienced prior to her first chemotherapy session had not surprised her, but the swelling panic as she approached her final chemo infusion was baffling. Knowing that her cancer had already spread to her liver once, she felt a nagging fear that the cancer might metastasize to some other vital organ. At least while receiving chemotherapy, she knew that something concrete was being done to battle the disease and that she was closely monitored by the clinical staff. We reassured Lucy that although her chemo was done, our care of her was not. To reinforce this, we reviewed her integrative plan, moved her to our next phase of care—growth control and containment—and scheduled regular conversations for follow-up and support.
