SOMETIMES, THE QUICKEST WAY TO REACH A DESTINATION IS TO MOVE SIDEWAYS

What exactly is meant by “sideways web development”? In fact, we’ve already seen some of it in this book, but we haven’t called it out by name. In chapter four we looked at ways to build an app that pulled someone else’s data into a separate vendor app, using a combination of server-side scripting and JavaScript. That is sideways development. In the previous chapter we walked through creating a FIFIO to screen scrape data from one app before injecting it into our website. That’s another example of successful sideways web development. So, let’s define it:
