As a reminder, the IFLA Guidelines for Library Services to Persons with Dementia (2007) includes compassionate communication skills we should be practicing anyway, but that are even more important in working effectively and positively with people with dementia.

Make eye contact;

Get the person's attention before speaking, and avoid distractions;

Speak clearly and slowly;

Pay attention to body language, both theirs and your own;

Use simple language;

Repeat phrases consistently to avoid confusion;

Be a creative listener;

Use simple yes or no questions and allow them time to answer; and

Include everyday topics in your conversation, as touchpoints for communication.
