Doretta sat on the end of her bed, thinking about the message their bishop had preached the day before and the things he’d said about prayer. He’d stated that when a person couldn’t form the words to seek counsel with God, they should pray specific verses from the Bible, such as prayers about guidance and direction. One verse Bishop John quoted was Luke 17:5: “And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith.” He stressed the importance of using this verse as a prayer and stated firmly that we should always praise the Lord and never stop praying. Another verse the bishop mentioned was First Thessalonians 5:18: “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Doretta wished she could thank God for everything and offer such prayers, but whenever she tried, the words would not come. After the pain of losing William, Doretta wasn’t sure she could ever pray and praise God again.

She thought about the last letter she’d received from Eleanor and how her friend had offered more comforting words and scriptures. Tears sprang to Doretta’s eyes and dripped onto her cheeks. Why can’t I accept my friend’s encouragement and move on with my life so that I can console others the way I used to? In all of Doretta’s twenty-six years, she’d never felt so far from God or been so despondent. Getting out of the house two days a week to work at Warren’s health food store had helped some, but even that had not filled the void she still felt deep in her heart and soul.

With a few exceptions, Doretta rarely laughed or smiled anymore, which was the opposite of how she had been before William’s death. She’d always been cheerful and positive. Losing the love of her life, however, and trying to deal with her physical injuries had snatched Doretta’s joy, like a robber sneaking up on an unsuspecting victim to take their prized possession.

Doretta had thought keeping busy during her waking hours would help, but the only thing it had accomplished was to make her so tired at the end of each day that she slept solidly at night. She did realize, however, that on the days she worked for Warren, she sometimes smiled and even laughed a little. She crossed her arms against her chest. I wonder why? Are the topics that come up what makes me smile on occasion, or does it have more to do with Warren’s easygoing way and the humorous stories he sometimes shares?

Doretta’s contemplations came to a halt when her bedroom door opened and Karen rushed in. “Have ya seen my katz?”

Doretta shook her head. “And it’s not likely that your beschwerlich cat would be in here.”

Karen gave a huff and folded her arms. “Olive’s not troublesome. She is a good katz.”

“She’s a fair mouser, I guess, but she belongs outside, not in the house.”

“Mama said I could bring Olive in for a while so I could brush her hair, but she got away from me, and now I haven’t been able to find her anywhere.
