What Genre Do You Write In?
The big reader sites usually don’t feature certain genres (like erotica), and will often warn that one genre or another is probably going to be less successful with their readership. Most use affiliate codes to track clicks and downloads, and they have a very accurate idea of how each book they feature performs.
If the stuff you write is unlikely to be picked up by the major sites (which are usually the only ones that can drive the thousands of downloads necessary to make a dent in the Popularity lists) then you should be realistic about what kind of return you are going to get from KDP Select free runs. Also, keep in mind that certain genres outperform others outside of Amazon (e.g. erotica and romance authors can achieve great success on Barnes & Noble).
