TWO HOURS LATER, THEY were back home and feeling well pleased with themselves when Mama arrived home.

“Hi, kids. Are you okay? Anything eventful happen?” Mama put a hand on each head and scratched Parker and Dixie behind the ears. “I tried to check in several times, but something must be wrong with the picture. I’ll just have a look…” She walked over to the camera in the family room and gasped. “Somebody’s tampered with this.” She ran from one camera to the next, checking each one. “No. No, no, no, no, no.” She sprinted up the stairs to her office. Parker and Dixie bounded along, hot on her heels.

Mama booted up the computer.

“What’s she doing?”

“I don’t know. I’m here just like you, aren’t I?” Parker positioned himself to see the computer screen. Mama punched some keys on the keyboard, and he gasped.

“What’s wrong?” Dixie asked.

“I failed to account for this eventuality.”

“Speak dog, please?”

“We’re screwed.”

“Uh-oh.”

Mama worked the mouse, clicking and pausing, clicking and pausing. “What?”

“Uh-oh,” Parker sang. There, frozen on the screen, was a clear image of Dixie’s nose inspecting their handiwork on the lens. Moments later and a dozen more mouse clicks, there was a barely visible glimpse of Dixie dragging Mama’s pants across the bedroom floor.

Mama whirled around in her chair and looked at Parker and then Dixie. Her brow was furrowed and her jaw was set. Parker idly thought she resembled the angry Schnauzer, Max, from down the street.

“What did you do?” Mama stood and approached Dixie, wagging a finger at her. “What did you do?”

Dixie sat with her ears back. “There she goes again, repeating herself. And why do I always get the bum rap? This was your idea, genius. Take responsibility.”

Parker tried not to snicker. After all, Mama did eventually figure out that the…creative…trimming of the ficus bushes was his doing and not Dixie’s, even if it did take her two weeks and catching him red-pawed to discover the truth. She would probably deduce the facts in this case too.

“I am so mad at you right now. Why, Dixie? Why did you do it?”

Dixie wagged her tail and gave Mama her most ingratiating smile. It didn’t work.

“Get away from me right now. I can’t bear to look at you.”

Dixie and Parker left the room and headed for the stairs.

Dixie said, “You’d better find a way to get me out of the dog house, mister.”

“I’m sorry, I can’t hear you, I’ve got a paw in my ear.”

“Like I’ve never heard that one before. You better sleep with one eye open.”
