Charles Howard (black, age 21). Murder. The crime was committed on 8/27/1910 in Franklin County. Fatal stabbing of about 30-year-old Edward Rice (white), who he reportedly attacked for no other reason than “sheer viciousness.” The electric chair successfully tamed him on January 31, 1912. Willard Richardson (white, age 38). Murder. The crime was committed on 2/17/1912 in Carlisle County. Handgun slaying of 55-year-old John B. Violett (white). Motive: obnoxious drunk. Violett had accidentally bumped into the inebriated killer on a sidewalk and the latter didn’t like it. So he pulled out a gun and started shooting. The price he paid was death in the electric chair on April 19, 1912. Source: Louisville Courier Journal, 2/18/12 (1:7) & 4/20/12 (3:3). Calvin Miracle (white, age 39). Murder. The crime was committed on 8/27/1911 in Bell County. Handgun slayings of 51-year-old Matthew Jones and 31-year-old Dulcie E. Partin (white male and female), who were shot execution-style thrice and two times, respectively. Motive: another obnoxious drunk. This one sat in the chair of death on August 30, 1912. Charles Smith (black, age 26) and James Smith (black, age 23). Murder. Brothers and suspected serial killers. Their crime was committed on 7/7/1911 in Mason County. Both executed for murdering a wayfaring black man known only as “Ed” (age not recorded), who was beaten on the head and thrown down a railroad embankment. Motive: robbery. James Ellis (white, age 31). Murder. The crime was committed on 7/14/1911 in Pulaski County. Magistrate killer. Handgun slaying of 45-year-old Andrew Jackson Beatty (white) who was shot three times in the back. Ellis had been arraigned for bootlegging. He pulled out a concealed pistol in the courtroom and opened fire. The Kentucky electric chair closed this case on November 22, 1912. Source: Lexington Herald, 7/18/11 (1:3).
