Chapter Twenty-Five

A cool blast of air swept over Eric as he stepped into the shadowed interior. It was a welcome relief from the heat pulsing up from the sidewalk outside. The coffee shop was Catherine’s idea; he’d rather have gone for a beer, but he wasn’t about to turn down her invitation. He was too curious about what she had to say.

Overstuffed couches with tables and easy chairs were placed in strategic conversational groups around the room. He checked the room for Catherine then glanced at his watch. He was on time, and she was late. Of course. He went to the counter and placed his order then looked around to decide the best place for this conversation, whatever “this” was about.

Eric had told her now would be a good time because Marty had gone out to Uncle Ken’s farm for a few days. Granny had wanted to see him. Eric grinned, and the cashier gave him a questioning look. He shook his head and thanked her. No way to explain the punch packed by an eighty-something old lady determined to have her say. Marty was in good hands.

He chose a booth along the wall. Best to be prepared for whatever was coming. He didn’t know what Catherine wanted to talk to him about, but he knew he should tell her about the DNA results. He took a drink and burned his tongue. Too hot. He liked it straight up, no fancy flavors or syrups. Just good, strong coffee.

Eric moved his cardboard cup back and forth across the table from one hand to the other. He glanced up as the door opened, but it was two older ladies with full shopping bags on their arms.

He took another drink. He wanted to be out of here in an hour. He needed to stop back in to see Ben Cooper. The fire inspector had more questions for him. Eric twisted the tab on the top of his cup until it cracked off. He was ready to be done with this.

“I’m late. Sorry.” Catherine sat down on the opposite side of the booth. Her voice was breathless, and her face was shiny from the heat. A thin trickle of sweat beaded at the base of her throat, and she fanned her hand in front of her face. “Whew! It’s hot out there.”

Eric motioned to the counter. “You want an iced mocha?” That earned him a big smile. “Sit still. I’ll get it.”

He went to the counter and ordered then turned to watch his wi– ex-wife—settle onto the bench. She was still fanning her face and intermittently lifting her hair off her neck.

“Here’s your iced mocha, sir. That’ll be four dollars and twenty-five cents.”

Eric stared at the young high schooler until he repeated the amount. He dug into his wallet for the needed bills. This was exactly why he avoided places like this. Maybe he should forget the electrical business and open a coffee shop.

He set the drink in front of Catherine, who was twisting her hair into a messy ponytail.
