Conclusion

As with any Lean tools or methods, hospitals should not implement visual management, 5S, or kanban because a book says so or to be part of a trend. The point of any of these tools is to create a culture for solving problems in the workplace, reducing or preventing waste from interfering with our work and patient care. Any of these methods should not be a one-time event; they should be part of an ongoing management system that helps sustain the methods and drives continuous improvement out of respect for patients and workers. Implementing these methods not only can reduce waste, but also can get employees engaged in improving the workplace instead of just complaining about problems.
