8. Keep Your Eye on the Spirit, Not the Scoreboard. Jackson repeats a story from Stephen Covey, who tells a Japanese tale about a samurai warrior and his three sons. The samurai wanted to teach his sons about the power of teamwork, so he gave each son an arrow and asked them to break it. They each did so easily. Then the samurai gave them a bundle of three arrows and asked them to break them, which they couldn’t. The lesson is that if you stick together, you will not be defeated.
Jackson notes that this story reflects just how strong a team can be when each of its members surrenders their self-interest for the greater good of the team. If an organizational leader can institute that level of teamwork, the organization is much more likely to be successful than one that motivates individuals to make individual efforts.
