TRUST COURAGE
Trust takes courage. No amount of upfront scrutinizing and evaluation will entirely remove the risks that come with trusting others. So, if youâre an âIâll trust you when you prove you can be trustedâ kind of person, you need to get over that. There will never be enough proof to fully remove all the risks. There will always be a chance that you will trust someone and theyâll let you down. Even our deepest and most valued relationships are subject to that constant risk, although likely to a lesser extent as time goes on.
Rather than trying to insulate yourself from harm, I invite you to view trust as something that requires courage. It takes courage to trust others because it means accepting the risk that they could let you down. For some leaders, trusting others will take little courage, for others a tremendous amount. Regardless, in either case the dangers of not assuming the risk of trusting others is more harmful. As a leader, if you canât muster the courage to trust, youâll be swamped doing tasks youâve outgrown, stunt peopleâs development, and have poor and shallow relationships. The choice of whether to summon the courage to trust others really comes down to whether you would rather trust others and assume the risk of being let down or not trust others and live in a constant state of suspicion and paranoia?

The biggest failures are when leaders or team leads dictate their plan and drop the mic. You need to continually check in with your team and give them support throughout the work getting done. In addition to helping the work get done, you checking in helps you monitor progress. Trust but verify.
