LESSON 3
Ways to Overcome Organizational Crisis
Everybody associated with the organization, especially members of staff, should keep hope alive during the crisis. The crisis management team should also be on hand to encourage the members of staff. Proper dissemination of information, as well as encouragement from the superiors can strengthen their resolves to face any inevitable threat with a smile, determination and courage.
In this section, the various ways to overcome crisis will be discussed.
Adoption of a focused approach
The crisis management team should take the initiative and investigate where things have gone wrong. They should identify those problem areas and also bring up a plan and strategy to overcome the problem.
Act based on correct information
As hinted earlier, it is important to base decision-making and plans on correct and relevant information. Assumptions and guesswork are never helpful in making plans or resolving issues during a crisis. The information gathered during an investigation into a crisis should be double-checked before it is submitted for consideration.
Change in perspective by employees
The employees should be encouraged to look at things from the brighter perspective. They need to understand that life has ups and downs; they should be shown that the current crisis is just one of the downs of life, which does not cancel out the ups that are certain to come if the situation on the ground is managed effectively. Members of staff should be encouraged to avoid complaining and cribbing, as this will not help matters in the least. They should also be encouraged not to make a big issue over trivial matters. They should be carried along so that they can understand the situation the organization is in; this will encourage them to act accordingly and also to shun every negative attitude.
Maintain effective communication
The crisis management team must communicate with all the necessary individuals in the organization during the crisis period. It is essential for information to flow effectively across every department in the organization. The employees should be made aware of what is happening, and they should be given easy access to the superior officers; they may have helpful suggestions about the critical issues on the ground. The superior officers or crisis management team must communicate with everyone via one forum; this is in the best interest of the organization.
Delegation of responsibilities
The responsibilities of each member of staff must be determined according to the specialization of the employee. Giving the right task to the right person is essential. It is equally important to motivate those given particular tasks to attend to the task as best as they can.
Decision making
Decision making should be fast during a crisis. The organization and crisis management team should be ready to take risks, but it should be calculated risks. Every member of staff should be sensitized about the possible signs of crisis. Members of staff should, therefore, report to the appropriate quarters immediately any of these signs are noticed. Crisis signals should be escalated to superior officers, who should also inform all concerned individuals for effective and quick management of the situation.
