Does the feedback you give maintain the person’s self-esteem?
In what situations are you providing too much feedback?
Summary—Finding the Right Spot
To move from being a good leader to a great leader, you need to find the right spot—your leadership sweet spot in each situation.
Realize that when it comes to coaching, discussing, collaborating, delegating, providing feedback, etc., there is a fine line between doing too much and too little of each leadership behavior.
Each situation is unique and may require you to alter or tweak your approach. As things change, you also need to adjust what you do to make the most positive impact. Keep an open mind. Generally, once we label a person or situation, we put on blinders to all evidence that contradicts our diagnosis.
The best leaders are able to diagnose situations and determine what words and actions will produce the most positive impact. Create a checklist that will help you diagnose the unique aspects of each situation.
Let’s be real. You, me, and every other leader makes mistakes. There are times when what you say or do has little or no positive results and may even make things worse.
The best leaders learn from their mistakes. They adjust their approach and become more effective over time.
It’s a journey! Every day there are new insights to be considered.
Be open and curious. Identify small opportunities to pilot ideas and learn what you’re thinking and doing when you are the most effective.
There is always room to improve and operate more consistently in your leadership sweet spot.
