EXERCISE 5: HOLDING STEADY WITHOUT BUYING OR SELLING

Jude Stoddart, a long-standing campaigner and practitioner in the equal opportunity and diversity field, told me about a simple reminder that she uses with the people she works with to stay on purpose and not get caught by the variety of agendas in the room.

It is a simple yet challenging reminder of what we are trying to achieve and how we can be useful in the spot we are in right now. She asks herself and others: Why me, why now, why this?

Try asking this question next time you are working within a group struggling to prioritise, facing difficulties or getting lost, or when these things happen to you personally.

EXERCISE 6: LOOKING AT THE OTHER MIRRORS

Think of a group that you are working in where there is a variety of competing interests at play. Similar to Exercise 2, do this exercise for all the other positions in the room. For each of the factions or roles in the room:

a. What is their belief about the causes of the issues we face?

b. What is their preferred outcome?

c. What opinion would they normally express?

d. What are the views in the room which you think are furthest from this view?

After doing this, what new options do you see for working together with these others parties? How does it change how you might behave, from your faction, in this group?
