56/100 ANYONE CAN BE BRAVE
While bravery is a trait of leadership, it’s not a trait found in all leaders. Sometimes we have to look further down the ladder to find the bravest people.
While courage is a trait all leaders should aspire to, it doesn’t necessarily correlate that it appears only in people high up the ladder. Often, those with the most to lose are forced to be the bravest.
When Chetna Gala Sinha first met Kantabai, the woman who would inspire her to open her very own bank, Kantabai was living in terrible circumstances. She was working as blacksmith, but she was desperate to save some money so she could buy a plastic sheet to cover her family when it rained. The bank refused to offer Kantabai a savings account, so Sinha applied for a banking license in order to start a bank for women like Kantabai. However, her license was refused.
When Sinha returned to her village, the women there told her to stop crying and sort the problem out. The license had been refused because too few of them knew how to read and write, so they decided to learn. And they also decided they would march to the banking authorities and show them that they could certainly work out the interest on a loan faster than anyone who worked there.
This determination in the face of adversity shows the sort of courage that can be found when people have nothing to lose. As leaders, we can tap into this by reminding ourselves of a time when we, too, had nothing to lose, when we didn’t have a title or reputation to worry about. What would we have done then?
