Chapter 6: Keep the Spirits High (When All Seems Lost)
With the huge, challenging goals we set for ourselves, it often becomes difficult to find anything worth laughing about at work. Every day, millions of people spend the entire day at work, wishing that they could just call it a day and go back home. The same thing also happens to leaders who don’t love their working environments. When you’re facing a lot of pressure at work, you might find it difficult to lighten up and crack a smile, or even laugh. This happens because you think that only by being serious you will get things done. Unfortunately, this is not the case. You’ll only leave work feeling exhausted and wishing that things could change so that you could be happier with your life.
In reality, happiness only comes to you when you change your attitude towards what is happening around you. Unfortunate events might happen from time to time, but if you respond positively, you will understand that bad things can happen to anyone. It is through these trying moments that our core personal values are put to the test. Think about it this way, being happy is easy when things are running smoothly. What happens when you feel that things are getting out of control? Can you manage to maintain the same positive attitude?
Good use of humor can bring about a huge change in any workplace environment. When executives use humor, it can make them appear more competent, according to new studies (Eubanks, 2018). However, it is worth noting that humor effectiveness depends on how it is used by leaders. There are times and situations where humor can be considered offensive, whereas at other times others find it productive and uplifting. So, before using humor at work, it’s important that you draw a distinction between good and bad humor.
