STEP 2: ASSESS

Reflect on your thoughts and actions this past season. Have you had high and healthy expectations of yourself and those around you? At the same time, have you been understanding and embraced a high level of grace? Take a look at the following graphic and assess which of the four quadrants you are currently living in.

STEP 3: LEVERAGE

Regardless of what quadrant you currently find yourself in, the goal is to spend more and more time in quadrant four. The good news is that there are practical things you can do to gain the positive results of both expectations and grace so your leadership will be known as supportive and striving.

Comfort Zones

Early in my career, I did a lot of my leadership development work in the field of outdoor experiential education. This often had me taking participants to high-ropes courses, getting them to harness up, and then challenging them to climb up the telephone poles and tackle a variety of challenges once they reached the top. There were lots of ways I integrated leadership development into these experiences; however, the biggest application was the ability for people to understand the concept of comfort zones and explore what it took to move beyond them.

There are many models and theories that point to this concept of comfort zones. Generally, they suggest that, as humans, we have three zones to be aware of:
