Adobe calculated that it was dedicating 80,000 manager hours to its annual performance review process. The company didn’t feel there were getting much in return. In fact, every February, after the reviews were completed, there was an increase in the number of employee resignations (because employees felt jaded and undervalued and were disappointed in their appraisals).

An Adobe executive – Donna Morris – decided to eliminate the cumbersome annual performance review process altogether. It took the company a while to figure out a replacement. Now they have a “Check-in” system – managers and employees have multiple Check-in conversations each year, addressing quarterly goals, feedback and career development. Best of all, there isn’t any tracking or documentation! There is also an annual Rewards Check-in, from which managers recommend salary increases based on performance.

Since the implementation of the Check-in system, employee engagement and empowerment has increased and turnover has dramatically decreased.
