* * * * *

I went outside and the sun blinded me. And then I realized: It wasn’t the sun.

Men and women, old and young sat around in a circle. Children sat on their mothers’ laps. The camp was so quiet I could hear myself breathe. No one spoke, no one moved, faces affixed to the glowing light.

God, but it was a beautiful light. It was the light of the stars, the light of creation, white-gold tinged in white-green. It was so white as to be everything, so everything as to be nothing. It danced but it stood still. It radiated but it was cleansing, cool. It reached through the pores of the people surrounding it. And as it touched them it set them ablaze.

The people were light. Gold and green blurred together into white-hot nothing, white-hot everything. Light upon light blurred together until I could not tell where one person ended and the next began. I looked for the light of God, the light to which all others had supplicated themselves; and I could not find it. I could not find it because everything was light. The people were light and the sand was light, the sky was light and the tents were light and one of those lights was God but which? Which one was God?

And then I thought: If I could not tell the difference, what difference was there?

And then I realized: There wasn’t.

Of course. Of course we all were God. Of course! For did we not all derive from the exact same primordial spark of light? Was the Nothing of Ain Soph not so unlimited as to be Everything? Everything was God! Nothing else existed, nothing else was! One light, One being, we were One and I never knew, I never—

“Hear, O Yisra’el! The Lord our God! The Lord is One!”

The words poured out of my mouth unbidden. It was the Word and it was the Truth, the only Truth there was. Tears filled my eyes and I laughed around them like a baby. I blinked them away and the light was gone, the people in its place.

They were not people. I knew it now. They were not people let alone many. They were Nothing and Everything, they were Light, they were One. Such grand deception that they saw themselves as many! Would it not have been better for them to know themselves as they really were? For without duality there is no conflict. You cannot hate your enemy if he does not exist. If everyone is your beloved sister how can you do anything but love her? If everyone is the sister that loves you unconditionally when are you ever in harm’s way?

Love. God was One and One was Love. God was Love. Love rippled through me and I quaked under its might. It blinded me with ecstasy. My knees all but gave way.

So this was the last mystery of the world. So this was the world unveiled.

How blessed was I, that I had been brought back from death to see it.
