THE SAME NIGHT the goat was killed, the man finalized what he had hoped would be the final proof. He used the rohypnol for what he also hoped would be the final time.

Later, when Orrin Porter Richardson, third-generation owner of the Zion’s Happy Camp RV Park, was interviewed Wednesday afternoon about what happened, he was as astonished as anyone.

“You bet. I’d be happy to tell you what I know. You bet. About a month ago, well, let’s see, it was exactly four weeks ago today from my records, see here, this man comes in dragging this twenty-four-footer rig—what? Yes, a twenty-fourfoot trailer, no slide-outs, nothing to look at on the outside, that’s for sure. Truck was on its last leg, too, I’d say.

“Said he was a writer, ‘author,’ he said, la dee dah. Needed a place to get away, he said. Peace and quiet was what he wanted, that’s what he said. We pride ourselves on that, you know. Man paid up front, cash for two months. Course we get all kinds here, but golly fetch, he was no looker either. Long stringy hair, feed store cap pulled down over his eyes, those wraparound sunglasses ’cause he said he’d just been to the eye doctor. Just for ugly, you know?

“You bet. I think I could help with a sketch artist. Maybe. I don’t want to be a pain in the seaterend, but most of what I saw was just hair and cap and shades. You bet. Happy to see the artist. Whatever.

“No, I didn’t think anything of it. Some folks who come to RV parks don’t want to answer many questions. A lot come in late at night and use our self-check-in and then they’re gone before dawn. But some stay a couple days. You know, they can be real social and go around and meet everybody. For friendly. But some just want to be left alone. And you better leave such types alone or they can act real ignert, I’ve seen it happen. Flip, man, you wouldn’t believe it. And I don’t want trouble. We run a clean place here. Look us up— no trouble here, look us up in your records.

“You bet. Back to the man. So he comes several times after he checks in. But when he shows, he comes in the evenings, on a motorcycle. Don’t know. Don’t know about the truck. Always wearing the glasses, same clothes as far as I could tell, same hat for sure. But he doesn’t stay, leaves in the night, walking that motorcycle out ’cause it’s quiet hour, you know? We’re real strict on that ’cause it’s a family place, and folks need their sleep. You don’t want to be wrangling one of those big rigs towing an SUV and get sleepy on the road… .

“You bet. When he comes, sometimes I watch him. I mean, I got to watch the pool and the washhouse always needs paper towels or some doodah has left the door open and the little potguts have got inside.
