Conclusion

Teatro Luna emphasizes a twenty-first century message as audience members are encouraged to view critically the other-izing of the female body. Teatro Luna sought to cross boundaries with Generation Sex. In many ways, we can see the use of cyberspace as themes and techniques in the play to experience the reorganization of space, time and bodies. As Lonergan states, “Social media is affecting our understanding of the boundaries between public and private acts” (24). We can see these elements as either absent or fractured, but we can also see the use of mediated and material spaces simultaneously used to resist and reinforce structures of gender. While some cyberfeminists are enthusiastic about the subversive potential of mediated spaces that are offered by digital technologies, evidence from Generation Sex points to a more complicated reality. For some, the mediated spaces reproduce oppressive spaces that are rooted in a society that continues to shame women. For others, the mediated spaces represent a medium to communicate. This devised piece challenges the very notion of who represents Latina and female experiences in the twenty-first century and how those experiences are told.

As Latina outsiders who expand the idea of what Latina identity and female identity are, Teatro Luna uses the notion of outsiders/insiders and places the audience front and center, asking them to take risks and share their reactions before, during and after the performance. By drawing attention to audience members’ opinions and feedback, the participants extend the impact of the performance beyond the stage. In this respect, even for the momentary run of the play, Teatro Luna and Latina and female audience members are networked, be it through the growing tweets early in marketing the play or the moment of playing on stage. Teatro Luna sought to cross boundaries with Generation Sex. This devised piece communicates strong, postfeminist messages about social media platforms that can lead us to codependency or empowerment, victimization or collective strength. As audiences watch, listen, post, and comment, their voices also become part of the postfeminist piece. Perhaps it is in the spaces between the mediated and material that the patterns and trends of contemporary twenty-first century feminist performance can become clear.
