Chapter Twenty-two

Ann had walked the whole promenade with Scout and back, one hand clasping her phone in her pocket and compulsively flicking her wrist to look at her watch and fed the dog as soon as they arrived back at the house. She hadn’t eaten much herself that day and still wasn’t in the mood to prepare a meal. Instead, she took out the remains of a banana smoothie from the fridge and drank it.

She glanced at her wristwatch again. It had been hours since she’d last spoken to Tim before he’d set out for her house after visiting the farmers who’d lost their stock. Something terrible had happened to him, and she wasn’t going to hang around to find out.

Reluctantly, she began phoning the police and ambulance stations in the vicinity of Clearwater. Just what she’d feared—to her utmost consternation. The Silverdale Police Station reported a motorcyclist had been hurt in a hit-and-run accident near Clearwater that day and had been taken to North City Hospital after a passer-by found him lying in a ditch on the side of the road, covered in blood.

Ann slumped back in a dining room chair, her head in her hands. Oh, no—this is the absolute limit! I’m not having him working for me after this, poor Tim.

❖

Ann frantically called the hospital and came off the phone shaking—not only upset from hearing about Tim’s accident but also the frustration with the medical staff not telling her anything. All they said was that he had been transferred to the orthopaedic ward, and she could visit him there.

Before leaving left for the city, Ann called Bryce Drummond again. It was now time to involve him—reluctant as she was to let go. But too many people had been hurt by Softsculpt, and she knew well that the invisible owners would remove anyone who stood in the way of their lucrative business.

‘Calamity Ann—I didn’t see you at Card Club last week. I thought we’d have a bit of a catch-up,’ said Bryce over the phone.

He still called her Calamity. Even though most of the police force only knew her by that name during her early years as a police officer.

‘My life is consumed by my latest case. I need help and am hoping you’ll come on board.’

Bryce invited her to dine with him that evening to fill him in on all the details.

‘I’ll be at the hospital for the rest of the afternoon, and I’ll come right over on the way home.’

‘I’ll look forward to it,’ said Bryce. ‘I can even remember your favourite dish—I’ll see what I can do.’

❖

A nurse poked her head through the waiting room door. ‘You’re waiting for Tim Martin? He’s ready now—I’ve just finished washing him.’

Ann looked up from her magazine. ‘Oh, thanks. What room is he in? Sorry—they told me at reception, and I’ve forgotten already.’ She stacked the magazine neatly back on the pile and flashed her ID under the young woman’s nose.

‘Room seven. He’s in a private room due to the nature of his accident.
