MAB’S CROSS TALES, WIGAN

FRED: When we came to Wigan to research the Mab’s Cross tale, we found there were three terrific tales about the people who lived in Haghe Hall long ago. Lily will tell the first one, the sad tale of Magdalene Montford.

THE TRAGEDY OF MAGDALENE MONTFORT

Magdalene Montfort and her cousin William le Norreys had been boon companions since early in her orphaned childhood when she came to live at Haghe Hall. They played hide and seek in the stately rooms, high wide corridors, narrow alleyways and secret passages of the hall. They chased each other through the neighbouring woods and fields. They danced together upon the green.

As William grew towards tall manhood and Magdalene blossomed into a beautiful young woman, they frolicked together beneath the trees. He took her upon his knee and caressed her golden hair. They fell in love and promised to be true.

Ah, but William desired to follow the crusading Coeur de Lion to the Holy Land. In his naïve zeal he told his love, ‘The cross must seal our marriage.’
