Guillaume Alfred Coignet, a native of France, was married to Charlotte Emérante Gaudé. Their first home was on Morning Star Plantation, just south of Thibodaux. After his wife’s death in 1869, Coignet married Stephanie Gaudé and moved his family to Octavia Plantation, located three miles south of Thibodaux on the east bank of Bayou Lafourche. In 1895, the Coignet family moved into their newly constructed home, pictured above. The family managed the plantation and lived in the home until 1913, when they relocated to Thibodaux. The daughters of the family then opened a shop that specialized in custom-made dresses and hats. The Octavia home and property were later acquired by Judge P. Davis Martinez. The photograph below is an early view of the Octavia sugar mill.
